| The Legend of Pashupatinath:- |
Skanda Puran the ancient holy text of the Hindu religion, describes the fame of Nepal as -"in the Himalayas there is a most auspicious blessed place, where Shanker (the giver of joy) in the form of Pashupatinath resides." All ancient Hindu religious text has described Himalayas as the abode and activity of Lord Shiva in which Nepal remained the nucleus.
The place has been acclaimed in the Purans as more sacred than a combination of thousands of pilgrimages.
To the west coast of river Bagmati, which arises from a sprout in the Himalayas, is the revered seat of Lord Pashupatinath.
It is said that a holy bath in the Bagmati river at this spot, praying with hymns of 'Rudri Mantra', followed by worshipping Pashupatinath Lingum with Panchamrita - curd, ghee (purified butter) sugar, honey and milk, will render the person free from the cycle of births.
So is the magnanimity of Lord Pashupatinath in the minds of Hindus the world over. |

Pasupatinath
The Guardian Deity of Nepal
Lord Pashupatinath is the guardian deity of Nepal. This sacred land sanctified by his divine glory, is the supreme pilgrimage for every Hindu on this planet. The temple of Pashupati, or Pashupatinath is located in Deopatan, a little town 3 km north-east of Kathmandu.
The temple attracts thousands of pilgrims each year and has become well known far beyond the Kathmandu Valley. In this vicinity, however, there are a number of other holy shrines, which are no less, important for the inhabitants of Deopatan itself. The town is surrounded by open spaces, fields and forests. To the east there is Tribhuvan Airport, which was once called Gauchar (cow pasture) Airport, and and the forested hill of Mrigasthali or Shleshmantak; to the west there is a large meadow; to the south there are rice fields; and to the north there is Kailash plateau, often said to have been the site of the Licchavi capital, Mangriha

Skanda A legend from the vedic period recorded in the chapter on Nepal Mahatmya in Skanda Puran states that Maheswar or Shiva hid himself in Shleshmantaka forest (presently identified as Mrigasthali forest situated near the temple). The gods searched for him and traced him living in disguise in the form of a Mriga (deer). They chased and caught the deer by the horn, which in the melee broke off and the deer escaped. Lord Vishnu made a lingum of the broken horn, and placed it at the spot.
The lingum in course of time got buried under the earth. Much later, the chief of a herdsmen noticing 'Kamdhenu' the holy cow, coming daily and milking the mound got the spot dug and discovered the cosmic lingum.
By some ancient chronicles, King Supusapa Varma built the pagoda style temple of Pashupati and Bhaskar Varma established the five faced Pashupati form of lingum inside the temple.
History records the worship of Pashupatinath as far back as Fifth Century B.C. In Yagarueda there is mention of a place called 'Pashupatipuri'. Pashupati town or Deopatan as it was called then was a well known township in the 5th century.
Amshuvarma 605 - 621 AD was a proclaimed devotee of Lord Pashupatinath and described himself as "favoured by the feet of Lord Pashupatinath, the protector". Since then, acknowledging his divinity is always a practice with all subsequent rulers of Nepal and the present royalty too venerates His divine magnanimity by seeking His protection for all at the end of his Majesty's official speeches - "Shripashupatinath le Hami Sabaiko Raksha Garun." - May lord Pashupatinath protect us all.

Pashupati Worship
By worshipping Pashupatinath, wealth, grandeur and rosperity are achieved physically and spirituallya and it is said that if a childless couple do puja at make vow to pasupatinath they will get child.Procedure Devotees visiting the shrine usually worship Pashupatinath with flowers, garlands, fruits, incense, akshata (whole rice grains) barley, vermilion etc. Since Pashupatinath is the form of Shiva-Shakti, red flowers is considered pleasing to Him. And, leaves and fruits of Bel and Dhatura (Dhatura stramonium) are most dear to Lord Shiva. Sweets are generally not offered, although it is not a taboo, since Shiva is an ascetic here.
Pashupatinath is worshipped in two ways -
Daily and Special
Every morning the west door of the sanctum is opened by the Bhandaris (store-keepers) at 4 AM, from when worship begins. At half past nine in the morning the other three doors are also opened. After bathing the lingum with holy waters, sacred worship by Panchamrit Abhishek (consecration by ghee, milk, honey, sugar and curd) is done by the priests.
Between 1 to 1:30 PM in the afternoon, the lingum is elegantly dressed up in gorgeous costume, made of brocade and set with tripunda (sandal paste mark) Chattras (umbrellas) are also placed on the four heads. On the top head, the graphic Shri Yantra is drawn with sandal paste. Arti is performed then.
Later Bhog is offered. In the evening Arti is performed once again after dusk.
Special worships are done on festivals i.e. full moon day (Purnamasi) the Ekadasi (The eleventh day of the new and full moon fortnights) and other auspicious days of the year
The sandalwood for making the sandal paste for Shri Yantra is brought from Mysore in India.
It has been a tradition to appoint a priest from south of vindhyachala in India who can worship Pashupatnath.
He however should be well versed in Vedas initiated with Pashupatishastra Mantra.
